Run for the Cure

Now that I'm running on a regular basis, I figured I should use my power for good! I'm hoping to raise at least $150 for the Run for the Cure 5K run on October 6th.

Breast Cancer will affect one out of every nine women in their lifetime. One out of 29 will not make it. Although the stats have improved tremendously over the past 20 years due to early detection, we'd like to see that number disappear. The funds raised from Run for the Cure will go a long way in helping with research, education and health promotion.

I have been very fortunate that my immediate circle of friends and family have not been affected by breast cancer. Two of Liam's teachers have, parents and relatives of our friends have and so have co-workers. So it touches us all in some way. So while I'm not running for any one specific person, I am running for all women.

I'm tickled PINK!

Did you happen to notice the cool change around here? I won a contest that FireMom ran on her blog Stop, Drop and Blog. FM was up late last night redesigning my blog as well as her own.

We are PINK for October!

Web sites will Go Pink during the month of October to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, get people talking about breast cancer, and raise money for research. But to be clear, raising money isn’t the primary purpose of this web event. The hope is that you turn your site pink (in whatever way works for your site), educate yourself about the multiple issues related to Breast Cancer, then take that knowledge and tell someone else what you’ve learned.

I have not been personally touched by breast cancer, in that no one in my family or immediate circle of IRL friends has ever been diagnosed. But breast cancer doesn't just effect family or immediate friends. It has a ripple effect, working it's way out from the woman with the diagnosis and touching everyone around her. I do have several on-line friends who are at the center of the ripple. So it is for them and every other person touched by this disease that I have gone PINK for October.
