Last year when I was walking to work every day I was on the same schedule as an older gentleman from the neighbourhood who was out walking his dog. Over time our "relationship" went from a nod and smile as we passed each other on the sidewalk to a casual hello to eventually stopping to chat so that I could pet the dog. The dog was elderly but loved to be out every day for her walk. As the winter wore on I noticed that the dog was slowing down and the white around her muzzle wasn't just freshly fallen snow. And then one day I didn't see them. I hoped that maybe they were just taking a break, waiting for better weather, but in my heart I knew that the dog had come to the end of her life.
Then I started working from home and didn't take that daily walk anymore. Whenever I would be on that street I would think of the nice gentleman who's name I never knew, and would wonder how he was getting along.
This week I had to go into the office for a meeting. And like always I glanced up at their house as I walked by. Just as I was about to look away the door opened and the gentleman came out, coat and hat on, ready for a walk. He saw me across the street and waved and smiled. As I waved back he turned to shut the door and out scampered the cutest puppy ever! I felt a huge smile come over me! The gentleman (I really need to make a point of finding out his name!) looked so happy that he was almost scampering. There was too much traffic for me to cross the street to be introduced to this new young pup, so I waved and smiled and kept going. And all day long I would find myself with a big goofy grin plastered to my face thinking about this nice man and his new puppy.

Perfect Moment Monday
I'm just squeaking in today!

I just recently started working from home. It was a sudden decision, so the only "workspace" I had initially was in our bedroom. Not ideal, but workable for the short term. Over the holidays I got spunky and started rearranging furniture. A spare room/playroom became my office. I still share the space with Liam however. He has a desk, a white board, shelves of board games and a bean bag chair.
Today was the first day that I worked at the new set up and it happens to be the shift that I work late. So when Liam got home from school, my day was really only just starting. He has acclimatized fairly well to having me work from home. He knows that he has to be superdy-duperdy quiet when I'm on the phone, that he can't interrupt me constantly, and that I can't stop and play whenever he wants me to. I do have the type of job that I can still concentrate if he is playing in the room, nattering on to himself as kids are want to do.
He has spent the entire time with me today playing "office". He made himself a laptop out of paper at school, borrowed some of my extra supplies and has set up shop. He has a real computer mouse hooked up to his "laptop" and is even wearing my old headset.
The perfect moment happened when I heard Liam make a telephone noise and the answer it "Attendance Line, Liam speaking!" sounding exactly like I do!

Perfect Moment Monday

Before starting work this afternoon I made a quick trip to the dollar store. $14.69 later I was all set. I got home, dug through the attic for the rest of my supplies and got to work. My perfect moment was seeing Liam's face and hearing his expression of "MAMA! Thank you SO much, it's so COOL!" when he saw his bed covered in Christmas decorations.

Perfect Moment Monday - Perfect Gentleman

My Perfect Moment happened on Saturday. Hilary had to work so Liam and I had the whole day together. After a great morning where he played by himself so that I could drink coffee and catch up on blogs, we decided to go out for lunch. We agreed on our local pizza place where we could share an order of cheesy garlic fingers (with bacon on my half of course). This pizza place has a small play room where kids can hang out while they wait for their food. Surprisingly for a Saturday at the mall, there was only 1 other kid in the play room. A little girl who couldn't have been more then 2. She wasn't talking yet, but babbled up a storm! She took an immediate shinning to Liam, that started with wanting to touch his hair and kept going with her following his every move. While he wasn't thrilled with the choice of play room companions, he was so very sweet with her. If she tried to take his toy, he would tell her no and pass her something different. Every time he came to the table to have a drink she would follow him and then tug at his arm to go back with her. He talked to her, made sure she had toys and put on a comedy act that her giggling hysterically. Her mom and grandma were so impressed at how well Liam played with her and how gentle and attentive he was, that they stopped by my table to comment.
So my perfect moment was seeing that all this parenting stuff really does pay off and I got to glimpse the gentleman that my son is growing into.

Perfect Moment Monday

I have 3 days that I'm calling my perfect moments from last week. We've been struggling with some behaviours from Liam that are challenging and hard and frustrating and emotionally draining. On him and on us. So my perfect moments are Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We saw none of the negative behaviours. Liam was a treat and a joy to be around. He was helpful, he listened, he cleaned up after himself. He was polite to us and to others when we were out. Bedtimes were a pleasure and so were mornings when he woke up.
Now before you think he's been kidnapped and had some sort of mind altering intervention by the Stepford's, I will say that he was a perfect 6 year old boy. There was some whining. There was some tears. There was some frustrations and anger. The perfect moments were how he handled himself during these times. He did not completely disolve or shut down, or react in any sort of physical way. He did not get down on himself and "beat himself" up about things beyond his control.
And for me, that is a perfect moment. I hope that it keeps going this week too!

Perfect Moment Monday

Lori started Perfect Moment Monday's some time ago. She writes:
Up until now I haven't had anything that felt like a Perfect Moment.
Perfect Moment Monday is more about noticing a perfect moment than about creating one. Perfect moments are just waiting to be observed, and can be momentous or ordinary or somewhere in between.
Up until now I haven't had anything that felt like a Perfect Moment.
Last week none of us had been sleeping well. It was the first week back to school after the holiday break and everyone was tired and cranky. After a particularly trying evening I was reading Liam his bedtime story. It offered some opportunities to sneak some math questions into it, so I was quizzing him on things like "what is 2 + 2" or "5 + 3". He was getting them all right and was very proud of himself (and I was proud too!) So I threw in a trick question:
"What is Liam + Mama?"
Without skipping a beat he said (with a big ole cheesy grin plastered on his face):
"LOVE"
And that is my perfect moment.
